AI Saves 99% of Lives on Seoul's Han River Bridges

Every day, Kim Jun-young and his team at Seoul's Hangang Bridge CCTV Integrated Control Centre save three to four lives. Thanks to AI technology monitoring 17 bridges across the Han River, they're achieving something remarkable: a 99% survival rate for people in crisis.

The center, established in 2021, uses 900 CCTV cameras equipped with artificial intelligence to watch over the bridges where Seoul residents usually stroll and picnic. When the AI detects someone staying in designated "loitering zones" for more than 300 seconds, it sounds an alarm. Officers immediately rush to the scene.

The numbers tell a powerful story of crisis and hope intertwined. Last year alone, the system triggered 1,270 dispatch calls for suspected suicide attempts. Of those, only 10 resulted in deaths.

"Most of them go with officers without protest, which means they were determined to end their lives," Kim explained in a recent interview. That cooperation suggests many people in crisis feel relief when someone reaches out, even in their darkest moment.

The system does more than suicide prevention. The control center also handles criminal tracking, traffic accidents, and drug enforcement across the bridges. But saving lives remains its most frequent and vital mission.

South Korea has long grappled with one of the highest suicide rates among developed nations. The Han River bridges, beloved landmarks in the capital city, became hotspots for tragedy. This technology-driven intervention represents a shift from passive hope to active protection.
