AI Startup Offers Free Cleaning to Train Future Robots

Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are scrubbing toilets and washing dishes in New York City apartments, and they're not charging a dime for it.

The startup behind this unusual service, called Micro AGI, believes the training data they collect is worth far more than any cleaning fee. Young college graduates wear baseball cap cameras as they tidy up homes, recording footage that could one day teach robots how to do the same work.

The company's Shift initiative sends workers to clean about five apartments daily, five days a week across New York's Upper East Side. Everything they do gets captured on video, from wiping counters to organizing cluttered spaces.

Founder Bercan Kilic says the biggest challenge isn't the mess but the lighting. Real-world conditions constantly change, and AI models need to learn how hands, cameras, and environments work together in unpredictable settings.

The company plans to expand beyond apartment cleaning. They're already filming mechanics fixing cars in Turkey and hope to capture footage of handymen, repairs, and errands worldwide.

The Bright Side

This creative approach highlights how hungry the AI industry is for real-world data. While simulated environments can teach robots basic skills, nothing beats actual human experience in messy, imperfect conditions.

The initiative also provides a temporary solution for people struggling in today's tough job market. College graduates who might otherwise be unemployed are gaining work experience while contributing to technological advancement.

Privacy advocates like the Electronic Frontier Foundation urge caution about inviting camera-wearing strangers into homes. In-home recordings can capture sensitive personal information that might be shared with other companies or governments down the line.

Still, the program offers a glimpse into how AI development might create unexpected economic models. Services that were once costly could become free or discounted as companies compete for valuable training data.

For now, New Yorkers can enjoy sparkling apartments while contributing to robotics research that could transform household work in the coming decades.
