Hong Kong Jockey Club Donates $3B for Health Research Hub

A historic $3 billion Hong Kong dollar donation is bringing world-class health research to the Northern Metropolis, creating a hub where scientific breakthroughs can change lives.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club announced its Charities Trust has approved funding for a new Life and Health Academic Research Building in the Northern Metropolis University Town. The facility will span over 30,000 square meters and provide shared teaching and research space for multiple universities.

Located in Hong Kong Park within the Hetao Co-Operation Zone, the building answers Chief Executive John Lee's call in his 2026 Policy Address for integrated scientific facilities. It's designed to attract leading researchers while training the next generation of health science talent.

The building represents more than bricks and mortar. It's positioned to become a catalyst for turning laboratory discoveries into treatments and technologies that serve real people facing real health challenges.

Martin Liao, Chairman of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, emphasized the timing aligns with both national and regional development plans. The project supports Hong Kong's transformation of the Hetao Zone into a global talent hub while contributing to broader innovation goals.

The Jockey Club has proven its commitment to nurturing scientific talent through successful programs like the JC STEM Lab, launched in 2021. That initiative already supports state-of-the-art laboratories drawing top researchers and helping translate discoveries into community impact.

Building on that foundation, the organization launched the JC STEM Early Career Research Fellowship in 2024. The program gives promising young researchers funding, mentorship, and industry connections to turn innovative ideas into practical applications.

The Club's Jockey Club One Health Tower at City University of Hong Kong shows this model works. That facility is already advancing interdisciplinary education in veterinary medicine and life sciences, bridging academic research with real-world needs.
