Air Zimbabwe Returns to London After 14-Year Break

After 14 years away from British skies, Air Zimbabwe is coming back to London with a fresh start and renewed hope for thousands of families separated by distance.

The national airline will launch direct flights between Harare and London Gatwick Airport on July 1, 2026. It's the first time Zimbabweans will be able to fly home nonstop from the UK since the route was suspended in 2012.

The revival comes through a partnership with Spanish carrier Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas. Under this arrangement, Plus Ultra will provide the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance while Air Zimbabwe operates the service.

This creative solution allows the airline to restart long-haul flights without waiting years to buy new planes or modernize its fleet. Many airlines use these partnerships to expand their reach quickly and affordably.

The Mutapa Investment Fund, which is working to restore Air Zimbabwe to its former strength, brokered the deal. The fund's CEO John Mangudya announced earlier that bringing back international routes was a key priority for 2026.

The Ripple Effect

The new flights will serve far more than just travelers. Zimbabwe's large diaspora community in the UK will finally have a convenient way to visit family and maintain cultural connections without complicated layovers.

Tourism operators expect visitor numbers from Britain to climb as the direct connection makes Zimbabwe more accessible. Business travelers, students, and government officials will also benefit from the streamlined journey.

The route meets all UK and European safety and operational standards, ensuring passengers can fly with confidence. London Gatwick will become Zimbabwe's gateway to Europe once again.
