Stanhope Elmore boys' bowling team celebrating their first state championship victory in Alabama

Alabama Bowling Team Wins First State Title With 6 Players

🦸 Hero Alert

The Stanhope Elmore boys' bowling team just made history with only six players on their roster. They clinched Alabama's Class 6A/7A state championship in a thrilling comeback victory.

When you have just six players on a team sport and five need to compete at once, there's no room for error. The Stanhope Elmore Mustangs boys' bowling team faced that challenge all season and still brought home their program's first state championship on January 30.

The Mustangs traveled to the Bolero in Mobile to compete in the Class 6A/7A state tournament. They faced the Hoover Buccaneers in a double elimination format that tested every ounce of their resilience.

Stanhope Elmore sent Hoover to the consolation bracket early in the tournament. But the Buccaneers fought back and forced a final showdown that came down to the wire.

The Mustangs found themselves trailing by 50 pins in the championship match. Instead of folding under pressure, they rallied together and won by 37 pins with a final score of 1,586 to 1,559.

"It feels good to win the state championship," said Coach Wilson. "It's been a long time coming! We've had championship caliber teams over the past several years but could never get everybody on the same page at the same time."

The tiny roster meant no substitutions when players were tired, struggling, or injured. Every bowler had to show up every single time.

Three Mustangs earned All Area team honors. Ryan Best placed second at Regionals, Seth Wilson tied for first, and Drake Abbott tied for seventh. Best now plans to bowl in college at Webber University in Florida.

Why This Inspires

Coach Wilson watched his anchor bowler Ryan Best grow tremendously throughout the season, not just in skill but in attitude. The entire team followed suit, improving their games while buying into something bigger than individual performance.

They held each other accountable when it mattered most. They encouraged each other through the tough moments and pushed each other to reach their potential.

"That commitment to each other is what ultimately led them to a state championship win," Coach Wilson explained. With such a small team, they had no choice but to become brothers on the lanes.

The victory makes history for the boys' program and continues a championship tradition at Stanhope Elmore. The girls' team won their state title in 2024, proving excellence runs deep in this Alabama bowling program.

Sometimes the smallest teams have the biggest hearts.
