Alabama Gas Company Boosts Scholarships for 25 Seniors
Southeast Gas just increased its community service scholarships to $2,000 each, honoring 25 Southeast Alabama high school seniors who've dedicated themselves to helping their neighbors. Since 2015, the program has awarded more than $375,000 to students who prove that good grades and good hearts go hand in hand.
Twenty-five high school seniors across Southeast Alabama just learned that doing good for others pays forward in the best way possible.
Southeast Gas hosted its annual Community Service Scholarship Luncheon on April 24 in Troy, celebrating students who've spent their high school years volunteering at food pantries, organizing clothing drives, and lifting up their communities. This year brought extra good news: the company raised each scholarship from $1,500 to $2,000.
"Each of these students represents the very best of our communities," said Greg Henderson, President and CEO of Southeast Gas. "Their commitment to service, leadership, and academic excellence shows that the future of Southeast Alabama is in strong hands."
The winners weren't chosen lightly. More than 100 students applied, and three independent judges reviewed each application using a comprehensive scoring system that looked beyond report cards.
Students earned points for grades and test scores, but the real weight landed on community service. Judges wanted to see sustained commitment over multiple years, not just one-time projects or school requirements.

The 25 recipients have logged countless hours with organizations like the Salvation Army, Wiregrass United Way, and Relay for Life. They've organized blood drives, led school cleanup projects, and participated in leadership programs like Boys and Girls State.
Three winners hail from Crenshaw County: Avery Brunson from Brantley High School, Cody Elliot from Highland Home High School, and Payten Landry from Luverne High School. The other 22 recipients represent schools spanning from Abbeville to Straughn, showing how widespread the spirit of service runs across the region.
The Ripple Effect
Since launching in 2015, Southeast Gas has awarded more than $375,000 in scholarships to 244 students. That's not just money for college textbooks and tuition.
It's an investment that tells young people their volunteer hours matter. When a gas company owned by 14 member cities chooses to celebrate service over just academic achievement, it sends a message about what communities value most.
Jack Tibbs, Mayor of Eufaula and Chairman of the Southeast Gas Board of Directors, put it perfectly: "This scholarship program reflects the values that define our region: service, hard work, and a commitment to lifting others up."
These 25 students have already made Southeast Alabama better, and they're just getting started.
