Alabama School District Wins State Award for Student Support

An Alabama school district just proved that focusing on the whole child pays off in big ways.

Theresa Huff, senior director of elementary curriculum and instruction at Anniston City Schools, recently received the Alabama MTSS Middle Region Rising Star award at a statewide showcase. The recognition honors her work building support systems that help students succeed both academically and emotionally.

Huff said the award reflects the district's commitment to supporting students inside and outside the classroom. The approach focuses on weekly Professional Learning Communities and coordinated K-12 support systems designed around each student's unique needs.

"This truly reflects ACS's commitment to supporting the whole child through academics, behavioral and foundational wellness," Huff said. The district uses evidence-based strategies that address what makes each student different while fostering long-term success.

But student achievement extended far beyond one award. The Anniston High School boys track and field team captured their fourth state championship title, with district leaders celebrating the athletes, coaching staff and families for their dedication throughout the season.

Students also got their hands dirty with real-world learning. At Cobb Preparatory Academy, kids celebrated Earth Day and Arbor Day by planting flowers, grass and trees while learning about conservation and environmental responsibility. They partnered with the Iota Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. to make it happen.

Why This Inspires

The district shows what's possible when schools invest in students as whole people, not just test scores. Anniston Middle School sixth-graders attended a "World of Weather" seminar led by educators from the McWane Science Center, connecting classroom lessons to live demonstrations. The Medical Science Club at Anniston High visited Bama Bucks Wild Animal Resort to study animal care, ecosystems and environmental health.

Even the youngest learners got creative. Golden Springs Elementary students explored fractions through hands-on classroom activities that made abstract math concepts tangible and fun.

High schoolers also learned about civic leadership through a Government Day Forum that introduced them to local government and public service ahead of upcoming elections. Career coach Tamara Towns organized an Entrepreneurship Day, connecting students with business leaders to spark ideas about innovation and leadership.

District leaders used their May newsletter to thank principals, teachers and school nurses for their continued dedication supporting students throughout the academic year. The school year wraps up with end-of-year testing May 5-9, followed by graduation ceremonies and celebrations through May 21.
