Albania Doubles Solar Power to 13% of Grid in One Year

Albania just made renewable energy history by doubling its solar power production in just 12 months.

The small Balkan nation generated 13.2% of its electricity from solar energy in 2025, up from 6.4% the previous year. That's nearly 1,000 gigawatt hours of clean power, enough to supply over 300,000 homes for an entire year.

The dramatic shift came from a boom in private solar farm investments across Albania. While the country has long relied on hydroelectric dams for most of its power, investors poured money into photovoltaic installations throughout 2025.

Albania's renewable energy mix now tells a compelling story about energy diversity. Public hydropower plants still provide 45% of the nation's electricity, while private producers contribute another 42%. Solar and other renewables now make up the remaining 13%, creating a more balanced and resilient power grid.

The country also managed to cut electricity waste during the same period. Grid losses dropped from 19.8% to 19.1%, meaning more of the power generated actually reaches homes and businesses.

Albanian households used 6.8% more electricity in 2025 compared to the year before, reaching 3,641 gigawatt hours. The increased demand coincided perfectly with the solar expansion, showing how renewable investment can keep pace with growing energy needs.

The Ripple Effect

Albania's solar success creates a blueprint for other nations with similar geography and economic profiles. Countries throughout the Balkans and Mediterranean region can look to this rapid transition as proof that doubling renewable capacity in 12 months is achievable with the right investment climate.

The reduced grid losses also matter beyond the numbers. Less wasted electricity means lower costs for consumers and less need for additional power generation. Every percentage point of efficiency gained is energy that doesn't need to be produced, imported, or paid for.

The solar boom also strengthens Albania's energy independence. By generating more power domestically, the country becomes less vulnerable to import price swings and supply disruptions from neighboring nations.
