Alexandria Approves Free Curbside EV Chargers Citywide

Alexandria just solved one of the biggest barriers keeping people from going electric: nowhere to charge if you don't have a garage.

The city council approved a curbside electric vehicle charging program that brings public chargers to neighborhood streets without spending a dime of taxpayer money. Private vendors will handle everything from installation to maintenance to customer service.

This matters because about 75% of EV charging happens at home, according to the Electric Power Research Institute. But if you rent an apartment or live in a townhouse without a driveway, that option simply doesn't exist.

Climate Action Officer Ryan Freed says the program helps close that gap and makes EVs feel within reach for more residents. The chargers will feature minimalistic designs and must meet strict city standards for placement and operation.

Up to 60 chargers can go in during the first two years. After that, the city will pause to review performance data and hear from residents before deciding whether to expand further.

The Ripple Effect

This program does more than just add charging stations. It creates a pathway for renters and apartment residents to join the clean energy transition alongside homeowners.

Local businesses are getting support too. The city offers free EV charging feasibility assessments to any business enrolled in Alexandria's Eco-City program, which takes just two minutes to join.

Business owners with off-street parking can apply for these assessments through March 31, 2026. The chargers give shops and restaurants a way to attract customers, keep them around longer, and potentially create new revenue.

When charging becomes as convenient as parking, more people can make the switch to electric vehicles. That means cleaner air and lower carbon emissions for the whole community, not just those lucky enough to have garages.

Alexandria is proving that the future of transportation can include everyone.
