Alexandria's Miracle League Needs Fall Baseball Volunteers

Picture this: a player rounds first base in a wheelchair, their volunteer buddy running alongside, while teammates erupt in cheers. This is game day at Alexandria's Miracle League, and they need your help to keep it going.

The league is recruiting volunteer "Angels in the Outfield" for its fall 2026 season starting in September. These buddies assist youth and adult players of all abilities, helping them hit, catch, run the bases, or push wheelchairs around the diamond.

The best part? You don't need any baseball experience. The league provides all equipment, and volunteers just need to wear comfortable clothes and show up 15 minutes early.

The Miracle League began in 2011 with a simple mission: give people with disabilities a chance to play ball. By 2012, the community had raised over $300,000 to build the Kelley Cares Miracle Field, a rubberized surface designed for wheelchairs and walkers.

Today, the field hosts not just baseball but adaptive soccer, wheelchair basketball, and other activities. It's become a rare space where players can socialize, compete, and be celebrated for what they can do.

Families who've been part of the league describe game days as transformative. Players who rarely get opportunities to join team sports suddenly find themselves sliding into home plate to thunderous applause. Previous opening days have ended with dance parties on the field, players and volunteers moving together in pure joy.

One parent told The Zebra in 2023 that the program gives their loved one a chance to be part of something bigger than themselves. The high-fives, the cheering, the sense of belonging—these moments matter deeply to families who often struggle to find inclusive activities.

The fall season runs through mid-October, with youth games on Wednesday evenings and adult games on Saturday afternoons. Special events include First Responders Day in mid-September and a 15th Anniversary Celebration Night Game on October 24.

Up to 20 volunteers are accepted per game day, and shifts fill up fast. Registration opens online now, with player registration beginning August 5 through Alexandria's recreation system.
