Algeria to Lead Africa in Solar Growth at 42.5% Per Year

Algeria just claimed the top spot for Africa's fastest renewable energy expansion, with solar power capacity set to grow at 42.5% each year through 2031.

The growth comes as Algeria launches ambitious solar projects, including a recent tender for 1 gigawatt of new solar power. That's enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes with clean energy from the Saharan sun.

The country already opened two solar power plants this year with a combined capacity of 400 megawatts. These facilities are part of a national program to increase solar capacity from 600 megawatts today to 3,200 megawatts in the coming years.

Algeria is also developing green hydrogen projects linked to its existing energy export network operated by Sonatrach. This positions the nation to become not just energy independent, but a clean energy exporter.

The timing couldn't be better. Solar technology costs continue to drop while Algeria enjoys some of the world's best sunshine. The country is turning geographic advantage into environmental progress.

Algeria's solar surge is part of a continent-wide renewable energy revolution. Africa's total renewable capacity will jump from 87 gigawatts in 2026 to nearly 180 gigawatts by 2031, more than doubling in just five years.

Solar power leads the charge across Africa with a projected growth rate of 27.84% annually. By 2029, combined solar and wind capacity will surpass traditional hydropower for the first time in African history.
