All 18 Kidnapped Students Rescued, 7 Suspects Arrested

All 18 passengers abducted from a bus in Benue State, Nigeria, have been rescued safely and reunited with their families after a coordinated security operation that also led to seven arrests.

The victims, traveling on the Makurdi-Otukpo highway last Wednesday, included eight students on their way to take Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board exams. The bus was stopped by armed kidnappers who forced all passengers into nearby forests.

Benue State Police Commissioner Ifeanyi Emenari announced that five passengers were released early in the ordeal, while the remaining 13 were rescued Sunday morning. All victims returned without physical injuries.

"We were able to mount pressure on the bandits to ensure the victims' safe return," Emenari told Governor Hyacinth Alia during a briefing in Makurdi. The rescue involved multiple security agencies working together, with tactical teams deployed from the national police force.

Eight suspects are now in custody, with seven directly connected to the kidnapping. Several victims have identified the arrested suspects as their captors, strengthening the case against them.

The Bright Side

Governor Alia welcomed the safe return of all passengers and immediately took action to support the rescued students. He urged JAMB officials to reschedule the missed examinations so the eight students could still pursue their college dreams.

The state government is providing medical evaluations for all victims and preparing support packages to help them recover from the traumatic experience. The Commissioner for Health and Human Services received direct orders to ensure proper care.

Beyond immediate relief, Benue State has launched special operations across forested areas to prevent future kidnappings. Security forces are working to flush out criminal hideouts in response to directives from both state and national leadership.

Governor Alia emphasized the importance of community involvement in keeping everyone safe. He called on residents to share timely information with security agencies, reinforcing that safety is a shared responsibility.

The successful rescue demonstrates what coordinated action can achieve when law enforcement, government, and community work together toward a common goal.
