Nigerian Doctors End Strike After Assault Apology

Doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Nigeria are returning to work after a successful resolution to workplace violence concerns. Following a sincere apology and new safety commitments, medical staff ended their strike on Saturday morning.

The strike began after a patient's family member assaulted Dr. Edidiong Ubia while seeking clarification about a prescription. The incident prompted the Association of Resident Doctors to demand accountability and stronger protections for healthcare workers.

In a letter dated September 2, Susana Adie took full responsibility for her actions and apologized to Dr. Ubia, the resident doctors' association, and the entire hospital community. She acknowledged her conduct was wrong and asked for forgiveness to prevent lasting tension between her family and the medical profession.

The hospital management responded by promising to establish a committee focused on protecting workers from future assaults. This commitment, combined with the family's apology, convinced the Nigerian Medical Association leadership that conditions were right to resume services.

Tiemah Akpabio, chairperson of the state's medical association, confirmed the strike would officially end at 8 a.m. Saturday. "The management has said they will look into matters of assault," she explained, noting the committee would develop concrete ways to safeguard hospital staff.

This resolution shows how accountability and dialogue can heal workplace conflicts. While the strike was the second safety related disruption at the hospital this year, the administration's willingness to create systemic protections suggests real change ahead.

A recent federal government investigation found 18 cases of assault against healthcare workers at Nigerian tertiary hospitals in just 12 months. The University of Uyo's new safety committee could become a model for other facilities struggling with similar challenges.
