Pakistani Nurse Saves Baby From Fire That Killed 14

When flames tore through a hospital nursery in Pakistan's capital on August 26, Staff Nurse Razia Noreen didn't think twice. She threw down what she was carrying and ran straight into the smoke.

Noreen was preparing medication at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences when fire broke out in the mother and child health ward at 7 a.m. Fifteen newborns were inside.

CCTV footage captured Noreen rushing into the smoke filled room and emerging seconds later with a tiny infant in her arms. She handed the baby to a doctor and tried to go back for the others, but the flames spread too fast.

"I didn't even think about it," Noreen told Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif when he invited her to his office on September 2. "Saving the babies was my responsibility as a nurse."

A sudden blast caused a blackout as she attempted to reach another baby. Thick smoke made it impossible to see or breathe. Fourteen newborns died in the fire.

The tragedy sparked nationwide outrage and led to the suspension of eight hospital officials after investigators found serious failures in fire safety and emergency response. But it also revealed the extraordinary courage of one woman who chose to run toward danger while others fled.

Noreen is a Christian in a country where religious minorities face significant challenges. Yet when Sharif honored her at his residence, he called her "a daughter of the nation" and said her actions would be remembered in history.

The prime minister presented Noreen with a check for 10 million Pakistani rupees (about $36,000) and announced she would receive the Sitara-i-Khidmat, one of Pakistan's highest civilian honors, at a ceremony next March.

Noreen told reporters she had been struggling to sleep since the fire, haunted by the infants she couldn't save. She said she didn't act for recognition or reward.

The baby she rescued is healthy and thriving. His mother will have a lifetime to be grateful for the nurse who didn't hesitate when it mattered most.
