All 8 Dogs Saved as NY Shelter Staff Races Into Fire

On June 9th, 2026, Special Needs Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation (SNARR) in Brewster, New York received a phone call no shelter wants to get. Their clinic building was on fire.

Staff and volunteers raced to the shelter, terrified about the eight dogs inside the burning building. Flames spread rapidly above the clinic as firefighters battled to control the blaze.

In what the rescue is calling a miracle, every single dog and every person made it out without injury. The team's quick response combined with the work of first responders turned a potential tragedy into a story of survival.

But the fire's impact didn't end when the last flame was extinguished. Water from firefighting efforts poured through walls, ceilings, electrical systems, and flooring, leaving the building uninhabitable.

SNARR operates out of two facilities, and their second building was already at capacity. The eight displaced dogs had to squeeze into an already full space, creating stress for both animals and staff who continue caring for dozens of rescue dogs.

The Bright Side

The building, constructed in the 1920s, needs extensive repairs that must meet current building codes. SNARR estimates reconstruction will cost between $70,000 and $90,000, more than insurance will cover.
