Family Saves Drowning Bear Cub in Okanagan Lake

When Christina Zamniuk's family headed out for a boat ride on Okanagan Lake near Vernon, B.C., they never expected to become wildlife heroes. But when they spotted a tiny bear cub fighting for its life in the middle of the lake, they knew they had to act.

The cub's nose kept dipping under the surface as it desperately paddled with only its front legs. "He was blowing bubbles," Zamniuk told reporters. "His little back legs were not moving anymore."

The family immediately called the B.C. Conservation Service for guidance while keeping watch over the struggling animal. They carefully looped a rope around the cub and gently lifted him aboard their boat.

Once on deck, the bear they nicknamed Boo Boo was shivering and terrified but safe. The family wrapped him up and let him rest on their boat for about an hour while he recovered from his ordeal.

Following instructions from conservation officers, they slowly motored toward the shoreline. With one final loving push, Boo Boo scrambled onto solid ground and disappeared into the forest.
