All Blacks Surprise Jacobson With Captaincy in Huddle

Luke Jacobson calls himself a "stunned mullet," and it's easy to see why.

The New Zealand rugby player was standing in the All Blacks huddle when the coach read out the starting lineup for their match against the Sharks in Durban. When he heard the word "captain" next to his name, Jacobson's jaw dropped.

"Cool way to find out," Jacobson said later, laughing. "Obviously, it's just something I've got to take with both hands. Just really humbled."

The surprise was so complete that his parents, Chris and Lisa, didn't have time to book flights to South Africa to watch their son's big moment. They'll catch the next test match instead.

For the 29-year-old, this represents an incredible turnaround. Last year under former coach Scott Robertson, Jacobson didn't play a single test match despite being picked for all three squads.

Injuries sidelined him for part of the season, but even when healthy, he couldn't crack the lineup. He was the only loose forward who didn't see game time during Robertson's final 13 tests as coach.

Why This Inspires

Jacobson's story shows how quickly fortunes can change with perseverance. After a frustrating year watching from the sidelines, he kept training and stayed ready.

When new coach Dave Rennie took over, Jacobson got a fresh opportunity. Rennie had worked with Jacobson during his time with the Chiefs franchise and clearly saw something special in the player.

The captaincy announcement came just days after a difficult performance against the Stormers, where the All Blacks racked up 16 penalties and three yellow cards. Now Jacobson gets to lead his teammates in bouncing back.

"There's no time to sit back and think, it's just getting on with it, growing and taking your opportunities," Jacobson said.

He never imagined captaining the All Blacks would be one of those opportunities, but he's determined to savor every moment once the match is over.

Sometimes the best surprises come when you least expect them.
