Olympic Gymnast Hezly Rivera Wins 2nd Straight U.S. Title

The shy teenager who barely spoke at the 2024 Paris Olympics just made history as a confident champion leading the next wave of American gymnastics.

Hezly Rivera won her second straight U.S. gymnastics championship Sunday in Phoenix, finishing with a score of 111.950 to beat runner-up Claire Pease by more than a point. The victory makes her the first American woman besides Simone Biles to win back-to-back national titles since Jordyn Wieber did it in 2011 and 2012.

What makes the win even more impressive? Rivera competed while still recovering from a hamstring injury she sustained at the Pan Am Games in June.

The transformation from Paris to Phoenix has been remarkable. Two summers ago, Rivera was the "wait, who?" member of a star-studded Olympic team that included household names. She spent most of that time listening and learning from veterans like Suni Lee and Jade Carey as they helped her navigate the biggest stage in sports.

Now the 18-year-old Texan is embracing her role as the leader heading into the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Her coach Anna Liukin even describes her as "motherly" to younger gymnasts, something Rivera laughs about but also takes seriously.

"I am comfortable with it," Rivera said about being a leader. "And I just love kind of being a leader in a way."

Rivera's path shows how quickly young athletes can grow when given the right support. The same guidance she received from Olympic champions in Paris, she now passes along to the next generation through positive encouragement and pep talks.

Her championship performance wasn't perfect, which makes it even more inspiring. After falling on uneven bars Thursday and dropping to fourth place, Rivera could have crumbled under pressure. Instead, she fought through another bars routine Sunday where she nearly stalled before her dismount, then delivered on the remaining events to claim victory.

Rivera feels a responsibility to create the same positive environment that helped her succeed. "I think it's just really important to give pep talks because when you're young, you're still learning a lot," she said. "So I just think it's good to get positive vibes."

With the 2028 Olympics in her home country just two years away, Rivera isn't hiding from expectations or stepping back from the spotlight. She's stepping into it fully, carrying both a gold medal from Paris and the confidence that comes from knowing she belongs at the top.

The quiet newcomer has found her voice, and American gymnastics is better for it.
