D-backs Beat Dodgers in Season Series for First Time Since 2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks just proved they belong at the top, winning their season series against the two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers for the first time since 2018.

The D-backs took seven of 13 games against their division rivals this year, including six of the last seven matchups. More than 136,000 fans packed Chase Field to watch the action, with Sunday's 4-2 victory keeping Arizona tied for the second National League Wild Card spot.

Eduardo Rodriguez led the charge with a masterpiece performance on Sunday. The All-Star lefty shut down the Dodgers' star-studded lineup across seven innings, allowing just two runs while striking out nine batters on 115 pitches.

What makes Rodriguez's success even more remarkable is who he's dominating. The Dodgers boast the second-highest team batting average in baseball, yet Rodriguez has completely figured them out this season with a 1.88 ERA across four starts.

Last year, those same Dodgers roughed him up for eight runs in two games. This year, he's nearly untouchable, becoming only the second pitcher in three years to face Los Angeles three or more times in a season and post a sub-2.00 ERA.

The secret weapon? Rodriguez completely changed his approach to facing four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani. In their first meeting in March, he threw Ohtani just one changeup. On Sunday, he went to it six times, including three straight pitches in the seventh inning, holding the superstar hitless in four at-bats.

"Changeup was working great," Rodriguez said. "I got a lot of swing-and-miss on it."

The offense backed him early when Ketel Marte crushed a two-run homer in the first inning, his 20th of the season. Gabriel Moreno added an RBI double in the second, and the D-backs never looked back.

With potentially another playoff matchup looming between these teams, the D-backs have sent a clear message: they're ready for October.
