Amazon and Partner Create 1,000 Jobs in Texas

A Texas border town is getting a major economic boost as Amazon and Wiwynn expand their manufacturing partnership in Socorro, just outside El Paso.

The expansion will create nearly 1,000 new advanced manufacturing jobs by the end of 2027. These aren't minimum wage positions either. Many roles pay 30% above the local wage base.

Wiwynn manufactures the server racks that power Amazon's data centers across the country. Those data centers keep hospitals running, enable emergency services, and power everything from streaming entertainment to artificial intelligence innovation.

The Socorro facility represents Wiwynn's first U.S. manufacturing site and a $1.6 billion investment in American production. By bringing this work stateside, Amazon strengthens its supply chain while building domestic capacity for critical infrastructure.

The expansion will grow the facility to 2,500 employees next year, with plans to reach 4,000 workers at full capacity. Positions span manufacturing and industrial engineering, testing and automation, quality engineering, equipment maintenance, and supply chain management.

The Ripple Effect

This isn't Amazon's first rodeo in Texas. Since 2010, the company has invested over $100 billion in the Lone Star State and now employs 86,000 people across Texas.

That investment has pumped more than $110 billion into the state's economy beyond Amazon's direct spending. It's created thousands of indirect jobs and opportunities that ripple through communities.

Wiwynn is partnering with local schools to build its talent pipeline. The University of Texas at El Paso, New Mexico State University, El Paso Community College, and Western Technical College are all working with the company to prepare students for these careers.

Amazon offers its Texas employees free education programs too. Since 2019, more than 14,500 workers have participated in training initiatives. The company's Career Choice program prepays 100% of tuition for employees pursuing further education at 35 partner institutions statewide.

New workforce development programs are coming soon, including AWS's Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Certificate Course and paid pre-apprenticeships for people with no prior experience. These programs create pathways into skilled trades related to cloud infrastructure.

Data center activity has grown U.S. manufacturing jobs by nearly 70% since 2017, adding over 200,000 positions nationwide. Socorro's expansion shows how digital infrastructure can create real jobs in real communities.
