Amazon India Invests $300M in Worker Safety and Healthcare

Amazon India is putting $300 million toward worker safety, healthcare, and financial security in 2026, expanding programs that already serve hundreds of thousands of employees and their communities. The investment builds on last year's infrastructure push and signals a major shift toward human-centered logistics.

More than 200,000 delivery workers and their families across India will soon have better access to healthcare, rest facilities, and financial security, thanks to Amazon's newest commitment.

Amazon India announced it will invest Rs 2,800 crore (about $300 million) in 2026 to strengthen worker safety and wellbeing while expanding its delivery network nationwide. The move represents one of the largest worker-focused investments by a tech company in India.

The funding will expand Project Ashray, which provides rest facilities for delivery drivers, and set up medical camps in communities across the country. Amazon is also boosting accident and health insurance coverage for its workforce and connecting employees with government programs like Ayushman Bharat, India's national health insurance scheme.

"At the heart of our operations network are our people," said Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations for Amazon India and Australia. The company employs hundreds of thousands of workers through its fulfillment centers, delivery stations, and quick commerce network.

This investment follows Amazon's Rs 2,000 crore spend in 2025, which opened 17 fulfillment centers and 75 delivery stations. The company launched Amazon Now, its quick commerce service, last year and has already grown to over 300 micro-fulfillment centers in major cities.

Amazon is also using artificial intelligence to protect workers. New machine learning systems will monitor driving behavior, optimize delivery routes to prevent overwork, and distribute packages more fairly among delivery partners.

The Ripple Effect

The investment extends beyond Amazon's direct employees. Programs like Sushruta support long-haul truck drivers and their families with health services, while Pratidhi offers scholarships for workers' children. By partnering with national programs like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Amazon is helping bring financial services to communities that traditionally lack banking access.

The company plans to double its Amazon Now presence in existing cities and enter new markets this year, creating thousands more jobs. These roles will come with the expanded safety and healthcare benefits from day one.

The investment is part of Amazon's larger $35 billion commitment to India by 2030, focused on technology development, exports, and job creation. But this year's focus on human infrastructure shows how worker welfare is becoming central to India's fast-growing logistics sector.

In a country where gig workers often lack basic protections, Amazon's move could set a new standard for how e-commerce companies treat their delivery workforce.
