Amazon Lost City Found: 3 Million People Hidden in Jungle

Beneath the thick green canopy of the Amazon rainforest, scientists just found evidence of a thriving ancient civilization that was home to up to 3 million people at its peak.

Using high-tech laser scanning called LiDAR, archaeologist Martti Pärssinen from the University of Helsinki and his team spotted hundreds of ancient earthworks left behind by a society called the Aquiry civilization. Flying over southwestern Amazonia in Brazil, the lasers could see right through the dense forest to reveal what human eyes never could.

The researchers scanned an area roughly the size of Harris County, Texas and found 432 ancient earthworks, including 396 structures that were completely unknown until now. These weren't small projects either: the geoglyphs were massive geometric shapes including circles, squares, rectangles, and octagons that would have taken around 300 people each to build and maintain.

The Aquiry civilization flourished from 600 BC to AD 850 across a staggering 183,000 square kilometers of the Amazon. At its height between 100 and 300 AD, the population reached an estimated 1.25 to 3 million people.

The ancient Amazonians used these geometric earthworks as ceremonial and political centers where they gathered for important events. They cleared forests, farmed crops like maize and squash, and completely shaped their environment in ways scientists never imagined possible in the rainforest.

The Ripple Effect

This discovery is changing how scientists understand not just ancient history, but the Amazon itself today. The forest we see now isn't some untouched wilderness that existed forever in its current form. It's actually been shaped by millions of people over thousands of years.

Researchers estimate that between 20,000 and 30,000 of these geometric structures could still be hiding under the trees across the broader region. As they expand their laser scanning to other parts of the Amazon, even more lost societies may emerge from beneath the green.

The findings could reshape our understanding of global climate modeling, soil composition, and biodiversity in the Amazon. What we thought was pristine wilderness was actually home to sophisticated civilizations that managed and modified their landscape for over a millennium.

While the Aquiry mysteriously declined around 850 AD (possibly connected to the collapse of the Maya and other American civilizations), their legacy lives on beneath the forest floor, waiting to teach us new lessons about human ingenuity and resilience.
