American Legion Awards $9M in Scholarships to 4,500 Students

Thousands of students across America just got their college dreams funded, thanks to a veterans organization making education its mission.

The American Legion awarded nearly $9 million in scholarships to 4,500 students in 2025, combining national programs with local post efforts to open doors to higher education. The organization's commitment to youth extends from coast to coast, with about 70% of local Legion posts contributing to the total.

The Legacy Scholarship led the charge with a record-breaking $1.7 million distributed to 559 children of fallen or disabled post-9/11 veterans. Children of service members who died in action can receive up to $20,000, while children of disabled veterans qualify for up to $5,000.

Beyond legacy support, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship awarded $251,250 to 101 high school students who participated in Boys State or Girls State programs. These scholarships recognize young people who are direct descendants of veterans and have shown dedication to civic leadership.

The National Oratorical Contest distributed $197,500 among 51 students who spoke passionately about the U.S. Constitution. Competitors start at the local level and work their way up, developing deep knowledge of constitutional principles along the way.

Local American Legion posts contributed over $6.6 million directly to 3,746 students in their communities. These grassroots scholarships show how individual posts invest in the young people they see every day.
