Thirty miles east of Montauk, the first turbines of America's largest offshore wind farm are rising from the Atlantic, and they're powered by technology that changes everything about how far from shore clean energy can reach.
The 924-megawatt wind farm uses a 105-mile cable that runs direct current instead of alternating current. That might sound like a technical detail, but it's the difference between this project working or failing completely.
Here's why it matters. Every long underwater cable acts like a giant capacitor, storing electrical charge in the insulation wrapped around its copper core. When alternating current flows through it, the voltage swings back and forth 60 times per second, charging and discharging the cable constantly.
The longer the cable runs, the more energy gets wasted just charging the insulation itself. Push the distance far enough and the cable uses all its capacity charging itself, with nothing left for actual power delivery.
Direct current solves this entirely because the voltage never swings. Once the initial charge happens, the cable just carries power without any waste. The tradeoff is needing converter stations at both ends, which are full buildings rather than simple equipment.

In this case, an offshore platform collects power from 84 turbines and converts it to direct current. At Holbrook in Suffolk County, a second station converts it back to alternating current for the local grid. Between them runs that single 105-mile cable, buried under the seabed and then underground.
Construction started in summer 2024, and the first turbine went up in April 2026. The developer expects to deliver first power to New York later this year, with full operation targeted for late 2027.
The project hit serious challenges. Foundation costs ran over budget so badly the developer took a $1.7 billion write-down. But they bought out their partner and pushed forward anyway.
The Ripple Effect
This isn't just one wind farm solving one problem. Every offshore wind project faces the same distance challenge, and most good wind sites sit far from shore where transmission becomes impossible with standard cables.
Direct current transmission just proved it can work at American scale. The next offshore projects already in planning can now use this same approach to reach prime wind locations that were previously too far out.
New York gets 924 megawatts of clean power from a resource that never runs out, and the blueprint now exists for dozens more farms up and down the coast.
The turbines get all the attention in photographs, but that invisible cable running along the ocean floor just opened the door to an entire generation of offshore wind.
