Ancient Maya Solar Alignment Lights Up Cozumel Thursday

When the sun sets on Thursday evening in Cozumel, it will shine through an ancient Maya window in a moment of precision that has repeated for centuries.

El Caracol, a domed structure built 600 to 800 years ago, will align perfectly with the setting sun at 6 p.m. at Punta Sur Eco Beach Park. The tower once guided Maya travelers along the Caribbean coast, and its unusual dome sets it apart from other ancient buildings in the region.

"This type of alignment in pre-Hispanic structures has been significant for the consolidation of archaeoastronomical studies," said Jesús Benavides Andrade, director of Punta Sur park. He describes the experience as "a unique connection with the ancestral legacy of the island."

The phenomenon only occurs twice yearly, typically in February and October, when the sun lines up precisely with the tower's upper opening. Weather permitting, visitors will witness one of the Maya civilization's most striking examples of solar engineering.

Punta Sur Eco Beach Park sits at the southern tip of the island, about 30 minutes from Cozumel's main cruise terminals. The protected reserve spans 1,000 hectares of beaches, lagoons, mangroves and forests, roughly three times the size of Manhattan's Central Park.
