Nigerian Town Gets Monarch After 25-Year Wait

A Nigerian town celebrated the end of a 25-year wait when their new traditional monarch was finally installed this week, closing a painful chapter and opening the door to renewed hope.

The community of Oke Ako in Ekiti State welcomed Oba Bamidele Olanrewaju as their new royal leader on Monday. The traditional throne had sat empty since December 2000, when the previous monarch passed away.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji presented the new leader with his Staff of Office in a joyful ceremony attended by community members who had waited decades for this moment. "This, to us, is victory at last," the governor told the gathered crowd through his deputy, Monisade Afuye.

The long vacancy stemmed from legal battles over who should fill the throne. These disputes prevented the government from moving forward with appointing a new monarch, leaving the community without their traditional leader for over two decades.

During those 25 years, Regent Tinuade Ogunbiyi-Adebayo guided the community through the uncertainty. The governor praised her steady leadership and the patience of Oke Ako's residents throughout the difficult period.

The Ripple Effect

The installation marks more than just filling an empty position. In many Nigerian communities, traditional monarchs serve as cultural anchors and unifying figures who help attract development and resolve local disputes.

The new monarch recognized this responsibility in his acceptance speech. "From this day, I am pleading to every Oke Ako indigene, regardless of which family you come from, regardless of which side of any past dispute you stood in, to make a decision that we must forge ahead in unity," Oba Olanrewaju said.

He emphasized that old grievances must stay in the past. "We don't have the luxury of carrying old grievances into a new era," the monarch told his community.

Governor Oyebanji urged residents to work together with their new leader to make up for lost time. He stressed that peace, unity, and love would be essential for bringing progress to Oke Ako after years of stagnation.

The Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Home Affairs, Ojo Atibioke, noted that a vacant throne creates gaps in community life. "A filled throne creates opportunities," he explained, pointing to the chance Oke Ako now has to build a unified future.

The governor also called on those who had competed for the position to support the new monarch. He asked them to partner with Oba Olanrewaju to bring recognition and development to their town.

After 25 years of waiting and watching, the people of Oke Ako can finally look forward together.
