Android Gets Scam Call Protection for Bank Fraud
Google is rolling out new Android security features that automatically hang up on scammers pretending to be your bank. The updates also include smarter app monitoring and better theft protection coming to millions of phones.
Millions of Android users are getting powerful new shields against increasingly sophisticated phone scams that have cost victims billions.
Google unveiled the security upgrades at its Android Show event this week, with the star feature targeting bank impersonation scams. These fraudsters have gotten alarmingly good at their craft, using spoofing technology to make calls appear as if they're genuinely coming from your bank.
The new spoofing protection feature does something beautifully simple. It automatically ends calls from numbers pretending to be participating banks, then sends you a notification explaining what just happened.
The feature launches in coming weeks for any phone running Android 11 or newer, covering most devices in use today. Right now, Google has partnered with banks Revolut, Itaú and Nubank, though none serve US customers yet. The company promises more banking partners will join later this year.

Google is also supercharging its Live Threat Detection system, which watches how apps behave on your phone. The upgraded tool will catch apps trying to forward your text messages to scammers or manipulating screen content through accessibility settings. These improvements arrive with Android 17 later this year.
The Ripple Effect
The theft protection updates address one of smartphone users' biggest nightmares. Soon you'll be able to lock your phone using just your fingerprint or face, going beyond traditional passcodes.
Once you mark a phone as lost, thieves hit a wall. They can't factory reset it, sell it, or access anything without your biometric unlock. This feature becomes standard on all new Android 17 devices.
There's also a smart privacy addition for location sharing. A new button lets you temporarily share your exact location with an app only while it's open. Perfect for finding that nearby coffee shop without giving the app permanent access to track your every move.
These protections arrive as phone scams have exploded worldwide, with criminals constantly inventing new tricks to steal personal information and money. Now your phone fights back automatically, no security degree required.
