Google Now Hosts Rival App Stores After Epic Legal Win

For the first time ever, you can download a competing app store straight from Google Play without any warnings or complicated steps.

Aptoide, a game-focused app store that's been around since Android's early days, became the first rival store hosted inside Google Play this week. US Android users can now install it as easily as any other app.

This major shift comes from a 2023 court ruling after Epic Games beat Google in an antitrust lawsuit. Judge James Donato ordered Google to allow third-party app stores in its marketplace as one of several remedies to increase competition.

Google fought hard against this outcome. The company tried to settle with Epic earlier this year, offering to make rival stores easier to install but keeping them out of Google Play entirely. When the court rejected that settlement, Google had no choice but to comply with the original order.

The difference is huge for users. Previously, downloading apps from outside Google Play meant enabling special settings and clicking through scary-looking security warnings. Now, approved rival stores install smoothly, and apps from those stores work just as seamlessly.

Aptoide currently offers a limited selection, but CEO Paulo Trezentos says the company has access to Google's full catalog of 1.9 million apps and 295,000 games under the court ruling. More will arrive in coming weeks and months.

The Ripple Effect

This opens the door for real competition in Android app distribution. Developers can reach users through multiple stores without extra work, since these rival stores use the same technical setup as Google Play.

Microsoft plans to launch an Xbox mobile store. Epic itself hasn't released its store through Google Play yet, despite winning the lawsuit that made this possible. But Aptoide proved it works, and more stores will likely follow.

The change gives users genuine choice about where they get their apps. It gives developers more ways to reach customers. And it shows that even tech giants can't ignore court orders designed to create fairer markets.
