Rows of American flags on display at American Legion Post during Veterans Day tribute event

Annandale Plants 250 Flags to Honor Community Heroes

😊 Feel Good

This summer, the Annandale Rotary Club will fill downtown with 250 American flags honoring teachers, veterans, healthcare workers, and everyday heroes. The tribute marks America's 250th birthday while raising funds for scholarships and community programs.

If you walk through downtown Annandale this summer, you'll see 250 American flags waving in honor of the people who make communities stronger.

The Annandale Rotary Club is launching its Flags for Our Heroes project on Flag Day, June 14, running through July 4. The timing celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a tribute that's both patriotic and deeply personal.

Anyone can sponsor a flag for $50 to honor their personal hero. That could be a veteran, teacher, healthcare worker, first responder, parent, mentor, or the neighbor who always shows up when needed. Each flag gets a sign with the hero's name, displayed at either the American Legion Post or Eileen Garnett Civic Space.

"This is an opportunity to bring our community together in a moving tribute to local and personal heroes while raising funds for local charitable work," says Kate Walter, the club's community service chair.

Fifty flags will stand at American Legion Post 1976, with 200 more at the civic space on Columbia Pike. Businesses can sponsor multiple flags, with packages up to $2,500 for 20 flags.

Why This Inspires

Small towns often talk about honoring everyday heroes, but Annandale is putting names to faces. A teacher who stayed late every Tuesday to help a struggling student. A nurse who held hands during the pandemic's darkest days. A parent who worked three jobs to keep the family together.

These aren't abstract tributes. They're specific people who changed specific lives, now recognized where everyone can see.

The money raised stays local too. Proceeds fund scholarships for Annandale students, youth leadership programs, and community service projects. One tribute becomes multiple gifts forward.

The Rotary Club tested this idea last Veterans Day with 50 flags. The response convinced them to expand it tenfold for America's semiquartermillennial celebration.

Three public events bookend the project. An opening ceremony kicks off June 14 at 3 p.m. at the civic space. The Josh Allen Band performs a free community concert June 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the American Legion. A closing ceremony on July 4 at 1 p.m. brings everyone together one last time.

Volunteers can sign up online to help install flags, maintain them through the three weeks, or staff the events.

By Independence Day, Annandale will have written a visible love letter to 250 people who make life better for others, one quiet act of service at a time.
