App State Soccer Makes History With 8-Game Win Streak

A single header in the 48th minute just made history for Appalachian State women's soccer.

The Mountaineers defeated Georgia State 1-0 at home on Thursday, extending their unbeaten streak to eight games and setting a new program record. The win broke a tie with legendary streaks from 2005 and 2007, marking the longest run in the team's history.

Junior midfielder Ellie Garrison delivered the game's only goal with a header assisted by redshirt junior defender Hayden Petrick. Both players recorded their fourth goal and assist of the season respectively, continuing their strong performances.

The first half was a defensive battle with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. App State earned five corner kicks but couldn't convert any into scoring opportunities as both teams felt out their conference opponent.

Everything changed three minutes into the second half. Petrick's precise pass found Garrison, whose header sailed past Georgia State goalkeeper Alondra Iriarte to give the Mountaineers the lead they'd never surrender.

Georgia State came into the match hot with a 5-2-1 record and their own five-game unbeaten streak. But the Mountaineers' defense held strong, limiting the Panthers to just one shot on target from forward Abby Batts despite Iriarte making six saves on the other end.

App State dominated possession with 12 total shots and eight on target. The defense did the rest, protecting the slim lead through 42 tense minutes of second-half play.

This historic streak comes as App State holds a 6-1-2 record and builds momentum in their first Sun Belt Conference season. The team's resilience through eight games shows the program's growth and competitive strength at the Division I level.
