Appalachian Ohio Students Win $870K in Scholarships

Dreams just got a lot more affordable for hundreds of students across Appalachian Ohio. The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio has awarded more than $870,000 in scholarships to over 330 students this year, proving that communities investing in their youth creates real pathways to success.

Four Athens County students are celebrating their wins. Riley Donahue of Athens received the Jim Raeder Helping Hand Scholarship and will study at Otterbein University, pursuing a future in STEM, teaching, or business.

Ijeoma Idika-Chima, also from Athens, earned the Ariana R. Ulloa Memorial Scholarship at Ohio University. The scholarship honors Ulloa's memory by supporting international students and those studying international relations.

Mason Mash of Nelsonville scored two scholarships: the Lee Beckett Legacy Scholarship and the AK Steel Foundation Scholarship for STEM studies. His classmate Lillian Paris also received the Lee Beckett Legacy Scholarship. Both are headed to The Ohio State University.

These aren't just handouts. Students competed through a rigorous application process reviewed by volunteer committees and donors who believe education transforms communities.

This $870,000 represents something bigger than tuition payments. It's proof that Appalachian communities are investing in themselves, one student at a time.

The Foundation partners with 14 local affiliate foundations across 32 counties, creating a network of support that keeps talented young people connected to the region. When donors establish scholarships in memory of loved ones like Ariana Ulloa or educators like Lee Beckett, they're ensuring legacies of learning continue for generations.

Over 670 scholarships have gone to students across 25 counties so far this year. That's 670 futures gaining momentum, 670 families breathing easier, and 670 reasons for Appalachian Ohio to feel hopeful about what comes next.
