Apple Extends Free Satellite Features Through 2027

Apple just gave millions of iPhone users another free year of potentially lifesaving satellite connectivity, extending a feature that helps people stay safe when they're completely off the grid.

The company announced it's keeping satellite access free for all iPhone 14, 15, and 16 users whose devices were activated before September 9, 2026. This marks the third extension for iPhone 14 owners, whose original two-year trial was set to end in 2024.

The satellite features let users reach emergency services, send messages, share their location, and even request roadside assistance when they have zero cellular or WiFi signal. The technology relies on Apple's partnership with satellite provider Globalstar to beam signals directly from phones to orbiting satellites.

For iPhone 14 users, this means nearly five years of free access to a feature originally promised for just two years. iPhone 15 and 16 owners are now covered under the same rolling extension, ensuring they can rely on satellite connectivity through at least 2027.

The features have real world impact. Since launching in 2022, Emergency SOS via satellite has helped rescue stranded hikers, drivers in remote areas, and people caught in natural disasters. When traditional communication fails, these satellite connections become literal lifelines.

Apple still hasn't announced pricing for when the free period eventually ends. The company's decision to keep extending access suggests it values getting the technology into as many hands as possible over rushing to monetize it.
