Architect's 1893 Masterton Home Built for Family of 10

When architect Charles Natusch needed a home for his growing family of 12, he didn't just build a house. He created a masterpiece that would still turn heads more than a century later.

The towering Victorian beauty on Lincoln Road in Masterton tells a story of dedication and skill. Natusch, who emigrated from the UK in 1886, designed and built this 161-square-meter home in 1893 after moving to Masterton during an economic depression.

The house features matching gables, four bedrooms, two lounges, and intricate details that showcase the era's finest craftsmanship. Original fretwork adorns the front porch, while hand-carved timber balustrades line the stairs. Colored glass windows catch the light throughout, and native timber floors stretch across the rooms.

Natusch went on to become one of New Zealand's most respected architects. His firm, CT Natusch & Sons, designed iconic estates across the North Island, including Bushy Park and properties at Massey University. Three generations of Natusch architects continued the family practice until 1997.

Now listed on Masterton's Heritage List, the home hits the market for the first time since 2017. The current owner is selling to move closer to family, according to listing agent Shari Feast of Harcourts Masterton.

The home has sheltered multiple families over 123 years, served as an Airbnb welcoming travelers, and stood as a neighborhood landmark. While it needs updating (the kitchen still features mismatched cupboards), its bones remain solid and its character intact.
