Argentina Advances 232 Battery Bids in Energy Tender

Argentina's energy future just got a major boost as 232 battery storage projects advanced to the final round of a nationwide tender that attracted stunning international interest.

The country's Energy Secretariat approved proposals from 37 companies representing 8,335 megawatts of battery storage capacity. That's nearly 12 times the 700 megawatts Argentina initially sought in its AlmaSADI tender, a competitive process to strengthen the national power grid.

These battery systems will do more than just store energy. They'll provide quick response power during peak demand, help balance the grid when renewable sources fluctuate, and keep the lights on during emergencies across six major regions outside Buenos Aires.

Each approved project must deliver at least four consecutive hours of stored energy, ensuring reliable backup power when communities need it most. The systems will serve critical connection points in the Northwest, Northeast, Central, Litoral, Cuyo, and Buenos Aires regions.

Economic bids open on June 24, with winners expected in early July. If Argentina sticks to its 700 megawatt target, the investment could reach $700 million, creating jobs and modernizing infrastructure across the country.

This tender follows Argentina's first major storage procurement, AlmaGBA, which already secured 713 megawatts of battery capacity for the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Together, these initiatives represent Argentina's serious commitment to grid reliability and clean energy transition.

The overwhelming response from 37 companies shows growing confidence in Argentina's energy sector and Latin America's renewable future. When a country sets ambitious clean energy goals and creates transparent procurement processes, international investors respond with enthusiasm.

The technology also enables Argentina to integrate more solar and wind power into its grid. Battery storage solves the intermittency problem, capturing excess renewable energy when the sun shines or wind blows, then releasing it exactly when needed.
