Argentina Hits Record Low Homicide Rate in 2025

Argentina just became the safest it's ever been, with murders dropping to an all-time low in 2025.

The country recorded just 3.6 homicides per 100,000 people last year, down 7.3% from 2024 and nearly 19% lower than 2023, according to official statistics released Monday by National Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva. It marks the second straight year Argentina has broken its own safety record.

The numbers place Argentina far ahead of its neighbors in a region known for high violence rates. Chile came in second with 5.4 homicides per 100,000 people, followed by Paraguay at 6.1 and the Dominican Republic at 8.7.

Meanwhile, organized crime has pushed rates dramatically higher elsewhere in Latin America. Ecuador recorded a staggering 50.9 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, while Colombia reported 23.2 and Honduras 19.2.

The improvements extended beyond murders. Robberies fell 21.6% to their lowest level outside of pandemic lockdowns, while theft dropped 17.4%.

Crimes tied to drug trafficking organizations also declined, with offenses involving narcotics production and financing down 4.3%. Smuggling-related crimes fell 5.1%.

Homicides involving women dropped 10.8% in 2025, with courts classifying 200 of the 279 female victims as femicides. Over two years, killings of women have fallen roughly 23%.

The Ripple Effect

Argentina's progress comes as many Latin American countries struggle with rising violence from organized crime. The country's success shows that reversing dangerous trends is possible, even in a challenging region.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime awarded Argentina an "A" rating for statistical quality in 2026, the highest possible classification. The certification recognizes the reliability and transparency of the country's crime data, placing it among the world's best criminal information systems.

Early 2026 numbers suggest the positive trend continues, with preliminary first-quarter data showing further drops in both homicides and robberies.
