Argentina Uses Drones to Plant 100K Trees in Gran Chaco

Argentina just launched a game-changing approach to healing one of South America's most threatened forests, and it's happening from the sky.

The Nature Conservancy Argentina and startup ReForest Latam are using precision drones to scatter biodegradable seed capsules across 13 hectares of degraded land in the Gran Chaco. This massive forest region, the second-largest in South America, has lost critical ground to deforestation over recent decades.

The technology works through what scientists call "seed rain." Drones fly over damaged areas, releasing capsules called iSeeds that contain native tree seeds like white carob, red quebracho, guayacán, and the aptly named drunken tree. Each capsule protects its seed and delivers nutrients to boost germination success.

Artificial intelligence guides every flight, analyzing soil conditions to determine exactly where each seed should land. A single drone can cover 13 hectares in one day, making this method faster and cheaper than traditional hand planting while reaching areas humans would struggle to access.

The Ripple Effect

The impact goes far beyond just adding trees to the landscape. Native Gran Chaco forests act like giant sponges, absorbing up to 300 millimeters of rain per hour and preventing devastating floods and soil erosion that plague the region.

The new forests will provide crucial habitat for endangered species like jaguars and tarucas, animals that depend on healthy Chaco ecosystems to survive. Local producers are offering land to test the methodology, weaving conservation directly into their agricultural operations rather than treating it as an afterthought.

These restored forests also become carbon-absorbing powerhouses in the fight against climate change. Every 45 days, teams return to monitor seedling growth and fine-tune their planting strategies, ensuring the new trees actually thrive and deliver their full ecological benefits.
