Argentina's Perfil Media Celebrates 50 Years Honoring Achievers

A media company that has chronicled Argentina's progress for half a century just celebrated by spotlighting the people still moving the country forward.

Perfil, founded in 1976, held its 16th annual awards ceremony at Buenos Aires' stunning Casa de Cultura. The event honored 10 winners across fields from science to sports, plus three special awards celebrating freedom of expression.

The sports award went to Las Leonas, Argentina's women's field hockey team, for winning the World Cup just two weeks earlier against defending champions Netherlands. Fullback Juana Castellaro accepted the honor for her teammates, who pulled off one of the biggest upsets in field hockey history.

Quantum physicist Juan Pablo Paz took home the science award, while rock group Divididos won for music. The group, formed in 1988, has kept Argentina's rock scene vibrant for over three decades.

The Ripple Effect

Perhaps the most moving award went to Hogares de Cristo, an organization founded in 2008 by then-Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio (now Pope Francis). The group sends volunteers into Buenos Aires' most vulnerable neighborhoods to help families battling poverty and addiction. A dozen volunteers accepted the award together, representing hundreds who do this work daily.

Economist Pablo Gerchunoff captured the evening's spirit in his brief acceptance speech, quoting Antonio Gramsci: "History teaches but has no pupils." His point resonated throughout the room. Learning from the past while building something better defines real progress.

Writer Gabriela Cabezón Cámara won for literature, and sociologist Ariel Wilkis earned the essay award. Two other prizes recognized biodiversity conservation work and a technology education program in Entre Ríos province.

Founder Jorge Fontevecchia closed the ceremony with hopeful news. Starting November 3, Perfil will distribute free newspapers to schools across Argentina. "Screens are good for producing interaction but do not fix the memory nor permit questions," he explained, hoping to connect young people with the deeper reading that print encourages.

The event drew Supreme Court justices, governors, diplomats, and journalists. Many acceptance speeches acknowledged current economic challenges facing Argentina, but the ceremony itself focused on celebrating people doing meaningful work despite difficulties.

Fifty years of telling stories means understanding that progress happens through individual contributions that add up over time.
