Argentina's Solar Train Powers 42km Through the Andes

For the first time in 30 years, the sound of a passenger train echoes through Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage valley in northern Argentina's Andes. But this time, it runs on pure sunshine.

The Tren Solar de la Quebrada carries travelers 42 kilometers through six mountain towns using only solar power. Instead of diesel engines or overhead electric wires, the two-car train runs on six lithium batteries charged by solar panels scattered across sunny Jujuy province.

The engineering is remarkably simple. The batteries give the train a range of 100 to 120 kilometers, more than double what it needs for a full route. When the train brakes going downhill, it captures that energy and stores it back in the batteries for later use.

Two fast-charging stations at Volcán and Purmamarca let operators top up along the way, with a third planned for Tilcara. The whole system proves that trains don't need fossil fuels or expensive electrical infrastructure to run cleanly.

Since launching in June 2024, more than 90,000 people have ridden the solar train through the dramatic Andean landscape. The service brings tourists to remote communities while cutting emissions that a diesel train would have produced.

The Ripple Effect

Argentina's experiment is inspiring railways around the world to rethink their energy sources. In Switzerland, a startup called Sun-Ways installed solar panels directly between the rails on an active track, generating enough electricity to power four or five homes in its first year.

The Netherlands now matches all its train electricity use with renewables including wind and solar. Nearly 58 percent of European Union rail lines were electrified by 2024, according to official statistics.

For regions without access to Europe's extensive electric rail networks, battery-powered trains charged by local solar offer a breakthrough. Remote areas blessed with abundant sunshine finally have a way to connect communities without adding carbon to the atmosphere.

The Tren Solar proves that sometimes the cleanest solutions are also the most beautiful: a train gliding silently through ancient mountains, powered by the same sun that has lit those peaks for millennia.
