Thousands of Arizona families are turning to food banks as living costs soar, and one nonprofit is inviting the community to be part of the solution.

United Food Bank in Phoenix serves over 34,000 emergency food bags every month to neighbors struggling to put meals on the table. The nonprofit partners with more than 125 food pantries, mobile markets, and hot meal sites across Arizona, but it can't do it alone.

Maggie Balek, the volunteer and corporate engagement manager, says the need has never been greater. "We know that the affordability crisis, the cost of living crisis, is hitting so many families," she said, noting that their recent Friday distribution saw a surge in people seeking help.

Volunteers are the backbone of this operation, sorting and boxing food packages at the main warehouse before they reach families. Beyond the emergency bags, United Food Bank provides fresh meat, dairy, and produce to ensure families get nutritious meals, not just shelf-stable items.

Last year, 5,000 volunteers walked through their doors, each one making a tangible difference in their community. The work is simple but powerful: fill boxes, pack bags, and know that each one goes directly to a family in crisis.
