Electric vehicle charging station with multiple charging ports along Arizona interstate highway

Arizona Opens First 3 Federally-Funded EV Charging Stations

Feel Good

Arizona just flipped the switch on its first three federally-funded electric vehicle charging stations, with 77 more on the way. The $76 million project will ensure EV drivers never face more than 90 miles between charges across the state.

Arizona just took a major step toward making electric vehicle road trips stress-free.

The state opened its first three federally-funded EV charging stations in October 2024, marking the beginning of an 80-station network that will blanket Arizona's highways. Two stations launched near Tucson, with a third outside Yuma, all strategically placed along major interstates in southern Arizona.

The stations are funded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, which awarded Arizona more than $76 million to build charging infrastructure. Federal grants cover 80% of the costs, with private developers picking up the rest.

"Most of the stations will be at places like gas stations where people are already stopping for other needs," said Garin Groff, spokesperson for the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers can grab a snack or drink while their vehicle charges in about 30 minutes.

The locations aren't random. Every station will sit within three miles of a highway, addressing the biggest worry EV owners face: running out of juice in the middle of nowhere. When complete, the network will ensure no more than 90 miles separate charging points across the state.

The chargers work with most EVs on the road, featuring both North American Charging Standard and Combined Charging System plugs. Private businesses including gas stations, restaurants, and hotels will own and operate the stations.

Two more locations will open before year's end along Interstate 40 in Seligman and Holbrook. ADOT is currently accepting bids for an additional 49 stations to continue expanding the network.

The Ripple Effect

This infrastructure rollout does more than help current EV owners. It removes a major barrier preventing people from considering electric vehicles in the first place. Range anxiety keeps many drivers in gas-powered cars, but a reliable charging network changes that calculation entirely.

The private ownership model means these stations will stick around long-term, supported by business incentives rather than depending solely on government funding. Gas stations and restaurants see the writing on the wall and want to serve the growing number of EV drivers hitting Arizona's roads.

The project also positions Arizona as a leader in the Southwest's electric vehicle transition, making cross-state travel increasingly practical for zero-emission vehicles.

With nearly 80 charging stations planned statewide, Arizona is building the foundation for cleaner air and quieter highways, one charging port at a time.
