Arizona Teen Wins $2.7M in Scholarships, First to College

When Anthony Ilk started applying to colleges last September, he never imagined he'd soon be choosing between nearly $3 million in scholarship offers.

The Casa Grande high school senior spent four years focused on academics at ASU Preparatory Academy. His dedication paid off in a stunning way: acceptance letters from almost all 37 colleges he applied to, with $2.7 million in scholarships.

"I didn't realize how big of an achievement I did," Ilk said. "I like to think of it as my work paying off."

Many of the offers are full-ride scholarships. For Ilk, the achievement means even more because he'll be the first in his family to attend college.

History is his favorite subject. He loves learning about the past, but now he's busy making history of his own.

His English teacher and mentor, Drew Sullivan, watched the entire journey unfold. "He's been doing this on his own and essentially has been so motivated," Sullivan said. "I've never seen anything like it."

Sullivan said Ilk has taught him about resilience, perseverance, and the grit it takes to make a difference. "I haven't had a student like him ever," the teacher added.

Why This Inspires

Ilk's success isn't just about impressive numbers on scholarship letters. It's about breaking cycles and opening doors for future generations.

"That's what I want to do," Ilk explained. "Not just to prove to myself, but to my family and my future kids that even though I didn't grow up in a family that went to college, it's something you can still do."

His message resonates with first-generation students everywhere: your starting point doesn't determine your destination. Hard work, focus, and determination can rewrite your family's story.

Next fall, Ilk will attend Arizona State University. With graduation just days away, he's already thinking about the path he's paving for others who will follow.

His future shines as bright as the work that got him there.
