Delhi Teacher Wins National Award After 22-Year Journey

In 2004, Suman Goel walked back into the Delhi government school where she'd once been a student, but this time she stood at the front of the classroom. She earned 60 rupees a day (less than $1) teaching while putting herself through college.

Twenty-two years later, that same school in Rohini has become the place where she built something remarkable. Goel, now 41, just won the National Teachers' Award 2026 for her work at GSKV Pooth Kalan.

Her journey started after financial struggles changed everything. She'd wanted to become a doctor after topping her class in 2002, but when her family moved to Delhi facing hard times, that dream shifted.

Teaching became both her way to afford college and her calling. She made around $15 a month in those early days, eventually securing a permanent government position in 2009.

But Goel's approach goes far beyond lesson plans. She calls herself a "mother teacher," staying with the same group of children through their early school years and watching their whole lives, not just their test scores.

Many of her students are first-generation learners whose parents work as daily laborers, tailors, or contractual workers. For these kids, Goel knows learning can't happen if basic needs aren't met first.

She keeps spare sweaters and pencils for children who need them. She monitors lunch programs, helps with tooth-brushing campaigns, and makes sure kids take their iron supplements.

Why This Inspires

Goel's work with special needs students shows what true inclusion looks like. She brings children with intellectual disabilities into classroom activities and helps build friendships around them, creating belonging where isolation once existed.

Her NIPUN Maths Kit helps students master basic numeracy skills and was selected for state-level recognition. Every single one of her Class 4 students hit their foundational learning goals.

Students have competed in state drama competitions. Former students she encouraged to write have had their work published through children's platforms.

Goel sees her own past in every struggling student. She remembers being that kid who needed a chance, and now she's the teacher making sure no child gets overlooked.

From earning less than a dollar a day to receiving one of India's highest teaching honors, her journey proves that the people who've struggled often become the ones who lift others highest.
