Greek Swimmer Conquers 91km Greece-to-Italy Route

Spyros Chrysikopoulos just proved that sometimes the second attempt is the charm when he became the first person in history to swim from Greece to Italy.

The 43-year-old Greek athlete dove into the water at Othonoi, Greece's westernmost point, and didn't stop until he reached Santa Maria di Leuca on Italy's southern coast. The journey covered 91.4 kilometers of open water and took 31 hours and 50 minutes of continuous swimming.

This wasn't Chrysikopoulos's first attempt at this historic crossing. In 2024, he tried the same route but had to abandon the swim when strong winds, heavy swells, and swarms of jellyfish made it impossible to continue. That defeat could have ended his dream, but instead it fueled his determination.

For nearly 32 hours straight, Chrysikopoulos battled constantly shifting weather conditions and powerful sea currents that tested every ounce of his physical and mental strength. No support boat could make the swim easier. No technology could do the work for him.
