Arizona Utility Triples Wind Power to Serve 150K Homes

Arizona just made one of its biggest renewable energy leaps in history, and 150,000 homes will feel the difference.

Salt River Project announced it will purchase 600 megawatts of wind power from New Mexico's new SunZia wind farm. That's enough clean energy to power about 150,000 homes across the Phoenix area and surrounding communities.

The 20-year agreement more than triples SRP's current wind portfolio, jumping from 288 megawatts to nearly 900 megawatts total. The SunZia plant started generating power in June and has been called the largest renewable energy project in U.S. history.

Its total output rivals Arizona's massive Palo Verde nuclear plant, one of the country's biggest power stations. Pattern Energy operates the facility, which will supply steady, reliable wind power to Arizona families and businesses through 2046.

The timing couldn't be better. SRP faces unprecedented energy demand and plans to double its total power capacity over the next decade to keep up with Arizona's rapid growth.

The Ripple Effect

This deal represents more than just cleaner air for Arizona. It creates economic partnerships between neighboring states and proves that utilities can scale up renewable energy quickly when demand calls for it.

The project moved forward despite federal opposition to wind power expansion, showing that local and regional energy partnerships can chart their own course. Clean energy advocates who recently won SRP board seats in April elections celebrated the announcement, though the utility says it had already been considering the partnership.
