Arkansas Single Parents Can Win $1,600 for College by Sept. 1

Single parents juggling work, kids, and dreams of a better life have a chance to win up to $1,600 for college, but the clock is ticking.

The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund is accepting applications through September 1st for fall semester awards. Parents in Jefferson County can apply for scholarships ranging from $400 to $1,600 to pursue associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, professional certificates, or skilled trade programs.

In 2026, nine local single parents received scholarships totaling $13,200. One recipient, Takirra Johnson of Pine Bluff, is studying human sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff while raising her children.

"This scholarship program has truly changed my life by giving me the support I need to keep pursuing my education, even when life feels overwhelming," Johnson shared. "Most importantly, it sets an example for my kids. They see that their mommy doesn't give up, even on her hardest days, and that inspires them to dream big too."

The financial relief goes beyond helping one parent graduate. It eases the stress that makes balancing parenthood and education feel impossible, allowing parents to focus on their studies instead of choosing between textbooks and groceries.
