Arkansas Single Parents Can Win Up to $1,600 for School

Single parents across South Arkansas now have a clear path to education without choosing between their kids and their future.

The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund is accepting applications through September 1 for awards ranging from $400 to $1,600. The money helps cover tuition for associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, professional certificates, or skilled trade programs.

Yolonda Benton of El Dorado knows exactly what that support means. While studying criminal justice at Southern Arkansas University, the scholarship lifted the constant weight of financial worry from her shoulders.

"It allowed me to focus on my education instead of constantly worrying about finances," Benton said. "Because of this support, I was able to keep going, stay motivated, and work toward a better future for myself and my child."

This year alone, seven Union County parents received $9,600 total to continue their education. Each one juggles classes with full-time work, childcare arrangements, transportation challenges, and everything else that comes with raising kids alone.

The program goes beyond just money. Parents receive mentorship, career guidance, workshops, and connections to local resources throughout their entire educational journey.

The Ripple Effect

When single parents earn degrees, entire communities benefit. Families gain financial stability as parents qualify for higher-paying careers. Local employers get the skilled workers they need to grow. And children see firsthand that education opens doors.

Since 1990, the Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $50 million statewide. That investment creates what CEO Jenn Morehead calls multigenerational change, transforming lives for both parents and their children.

"All parents deserve the opportunity to build a better future through education," Morehead said. "When we remove barriers to earning a degree or workforce credential, families, employers, and communities all benefit."

Eligible applicants must be single parents living in qualifying Arkansas counties or Bowie County, Texas. They need a high school diploma or GED, must enroll in at least one three-credit-hour course, and maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Income guidelines and other requirements apply.

Both new and returning students can apply at aspsf.org/scholarships before the September 1 deadline.
