Arkansas Teacher Adopts Student After Foster Plans Fall Through
A second grade teacher in Arkansas opened her home to a creative, book-loving student after the girl's adoption plans fell through. Five years later, Mary is thriving with her forever family and a baby brother who adores her.
When seven-year-old Mary walked into Lexi McClelland's classroom at Elm Tree Elementary in Bentonville, Arkansas, she was singing her own name and ready to learn. The energetic second grader loved books, dreamed up inventions, and once designed a trolley system to deliver library books around the room.
Mary had spent years moving through foster homes, but her imagination shined bright in McClelland's classroom. "She was naturally funny and incredibly creative," McClelland remembered. "She had these little comments that felt wise beyond her years."
McClelland tried not to play favorites, but something felt different about Mary. "It felt like God led it," she said. "Like she was meant to be in my life."
When the school year ended, Mary was expected to be adopted by another family. McClelland felt heartbroken but happy for her young student's fresh start.
Then everything changed. The adoption plans unexpectedly fell through, and when McClelland learned Mary needed a home again, she didn't hesitate. "If she's available, she is coming to our house," she told her husband Max.

Just weeks later, Mary arrived at their home with only a few belongings. The transition felt natural from the start. "As soon as I walked in, I was like... 'Let's have some fun,'" Mary recalled.
By Christmas Eve 2021, the couple knew they wanted to make it permanent. They gave Mary a children's book about a bunny finding its forever home with a handwritten note inside asking if she wanted to officially join their family.
Mary could hardly believe it was real. "She had to take a moment to be like, 'Is this real?'" McClelland said.
Sunny's Take
On April 7, 2022, Mary tapped the judge's gavel herself to finalize the adoption. "There wasn't a dry eye in the room," Max remembered.
Now 12, Mary is thriving as a middle schooler who still loves reading, creativity, and making people laugh. Friends and family often compare her and Lexi to Matilda and Miss Honey, a comparison they happily embrace.
The McClellands have since welcomed baby Murphy, and Mary has fully embraced her role as big sister. "He's obsessed with her," McClelland said. "And she's obsessed with him."
Sometimes the forever family you're searching for is already in your classroom.
