Arkansas Unemployment Drops to 4.1% as Jobs Hit Record High

Arkansas just hit a milestone worth celebrating: more people are working in the Natural State than ever before.

The state's unemployment rate dropped to 4.1% in June, with a record 1,398,001 Arkansans employed. That's 2,830 more people working than in May and nearly 24,000 more than last year at this time.

Even better news? More people are actively participating in the workforce. The labor force grew by nearly 1,920 people in June alone, pushing the total to another record high of 1,457,656.

Michael Pakko, chief economist at the Arkansas Economic Development Institute, notes the state is seeing "slow, positive" growth that mirrors national trends. While job growth has slowed, it remains in positive territory rather than contracting.

The number of unemployed Arkansans dropped for the fifth consecutive month, falling to 59,655 in June. That's 911 fewer people out of work compared to May.

Arkansas' labor force participation rate also improved, climbing to 59.2% in June. That's seven-tenths of a percent higher than last year, meaning more working-age Arkansans are either employed or actively looking for work.

Year over year, the state added 10,000 nonfarm payroll jobs. The biggest gains came in leisure and hospitality, which added 3,900 jobs, and trade, transportation, and utilities, which gained 3,600 positions.

The Bright Side

Arkansas is bucking some national trends. While unemployment held steady in 40 states and rose in two, Arkansas was among just eight states where it actually fell. The state's 4.1% unemployment rate sits below the national average of 4.2%.

The consistent five-month decline in unemployment numbers tells a story of steady improvement. Even amid economic uncertainty, Arkansas employers are finding ways to grow their teams and give more people opportunities.
