Arsenal FC Donates Old Socks to Rescue Horses
Premier League champions Arsenal FC found the perfect second life for their worn-out game socks: protecting injured horses and donkeys at a rescue sanctuary. The Norfolk rescue center now uses hundreds of footless football socks as medical bandages and fly protection.
When Arsenal FC won their first Premier League title in 22 years, they created more than just championship memories. They also generated hundreds of worn-out socks that are now helping rescue animals heal.
The football club donated their used game socks to Redwings Horse Hospital in Norfolk, where the bright red gear has become essential medical equipment. The sanctuary uses them to protect sensitive legs from flies, hold veterinary bandages in place, and prevent headcollar rubs on their rescued residents.
Nicola Knight from Redwings called the donation "one of the more unusual" they'd received but also a "game changer" for their work. The socks even hold back leg hair during hoof trimming, proving surprisingly versatile for animal care.
Michael Lloyd, Arsenal's Operational Sustainability Manager, came up with the creative solution after recognizing how quickly football socks wear out. Between tackles, cleats, and sliding challenges across 90 minutes of play, most socks don't survive to be worn again.

Arsenal played 63 games last season across all competitions, fielding 11 players plus up to 5 substitutes each match. That could mean nearly 1,000 pairs of socks that would otherwise end up in landfills.
The timing couldn't be better for Redwings. The sanctuary cares for over 1,000 horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules daily, with more than 1,500 animals in their overall program. Each animal needs two socks, not one, making the demand enormous.
The Ripple Effect
This partnership shows how creative thinking can turn sports waste into animal welfare wins. Other football clubs are now watching to see if they can replicate the program with their own local animal sanctuaries.
Arsenal returns to defend their title in August, which means more games, more worn socks, and more help for animals in need.
