Artist JR Wraps Paris Bridge in Giant Inflatable Cave

Paris woke up this week to find its oldest bridge disappearing beneath a giant rocky illusion that looks like a prehistoric cave rising from the Seine.

French street artist JR, known as the "French Banksy," began inflating his monumental artwork over the 400-year-old Pont Neuf bridge on Thursday. The transformation turns the historic landmark into what appears to be an ancient limestone cliff stretching across the river.

The numbers behind this free public installation are staggering. The structure stretches 120 meters long and rises 18 meters high, as tall as a six-story building. Yet it weighs only five tons because it's built almost entirely from air, with 80 fabric arches holding 20,000 cubic meters of it.

Starting June 6, visitors can walk through a long, dark tunnel inside the cave where no daylight enters. JR designed the space to make people stop and "lose track of time" on one of Paris's busiest bridges. The experience will be completely free and open around the clock through June 28.

Twenty-five artisans hand-stitched the fabric in a village in Brittany, careful not to damage any of the historic stone. Engineers spent weeks rehearsing a gentle collapse in case of power failure, ensuring the installation is completely safe.

The artwork pays tribute to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who wrapped the same bridge in pale golden fabric back in 1985 and drew three million visitors. A square beside the bridge now carries their names.

JR says his cave brings "mineral and nature" back to the city center, imagining the dressed stone returning to the limestone quarries where Paris itself originated. He also built it as a modern take on Plato's cave allegory, suggesting our phones and social media algorithms have become today's version of shadows on a wall.

The installation includes augmented reality features created by Snap and ambient sounds from Thomas Bangalter, formerly of Daft Punk. When the cave comes down after three weeks, all fabric will be reused or recycled, leaving no trace behind.

This project shows how public art can transform everyday spaces into magical experiences without costing taxpayers a cent. Funded entirely by JR's artwork sales and corporate partners, it proves that beauty and wonder can be gifts to entire cities.

The timing couldn't be better, coinciding with Paris Fashion Week, World Music Day, and the all-night Nuit Blanche arts festival. Visitors from around the world will get to experience something truly extraordinary in one of the planet's most beloved cities.

Then the Pont Neuf, older than the French Revolution itself, will reemerge exactly as it was, carrying Parisians across the Seine for centuries more to come.
